According to official statistics and international comparisons, Chile has overcome poverty, but social inequalities remain immense. But only a small group benefits from the wealth of the neoliberal system established in 1975. A swelling student-bubble recently triggered major social protests. However, the questions raised by these social movements reflect issues the country has faced since its foundation by Spanish conquerors.
In an essay in architheses new issue Chile economic sociologist Rachel Theodore illustrates the social and economic inequalities in the Andean state with facts and figures. They convey a different picture than that which Chile travellers generally take home from a holiday from the "country at the end of the world" trip.
